Voxel Link (VL) loads all RAM structural steel shape Revit families on the fly, as needed. All of the steel shapes available in RAM are available in Revit except for CoreBRB, StarBRB and flat plate braces (these are skipped). Initially, VL looks to the default Revit installation folder for the structural family files – wide flanges, channels, angles, etc. - for example C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2024\Libraries\English-Imperial\US\Structural Framing\Steel\AISC 15.0\.

There are about two dozen files (structural framing and structural columns) searched when a new family is needed. If you have made custom changes to some families, they will need to be available in the default folders on the local desktop. The following is a list of all the families searched (names vary slightly depending on the Revit version):

Starting with v1.2.x, custom library locations can be defined - Custom Root and Full Custom. The configuration is adjusted via a menu dropdown in the Import settings dialog. The current configuration is displayed just under that dropdown. 

Custom Root is an exact copy of the delivered Revit folder structure as well as the file names (only for the files listed above). The Custom Root configuration would be applicable to a company that maintains a corporate standard on their server. If any folder or file name differs from the delivered arrangement, the Full Custom option must be selected.

The Full Custom configuration allows for a freeform assignment of the structural family locations. The default locations will be the standard Revit delivered location. One or all of the families can be reassigned and can be located anywhere visible with your corporate login credentials. The file selection is handled via a traditional Windows dialog box.

The selected configuration is Revit version specific and is saved to a configuration file on the users desktop. That file is located here: C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Local\VoxelLink\FamilyLibrarySettings.vlcfg
The file can be copied to any desktop so the configuration is only created once. Your IT person could configure one desktop for all working versions of Revit, then copy the FamilyLibrarySettings.vlcfg file to other desktops in the office.
