In Voxel Link 1.2.0+, the default location for the structural framing and column familes is the default Revit installed location which for later versions (2023+) has to be installed manually. Those locations are:
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2026\Libraries\English-Imperial\US\Structural Framing\...
and
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2026\Libraries\English-Imperial\US\Structural Columns\...
However, not everyone uses the out-of-the-box familes. Voxel Link allows for two types of family location customizations. One is Custom Root and the other is Full Custom. The Import Settings dialog has a menu in the top left corner to define these configurations or reset back to the default Revit installation location. There is also a text label below that menu that shows the current location.
The Custom Root optoin can be used when an EXACT copy of the Revit directory structure and file naming is used but just located on a server, for example. Every directory and file name from Structural Framing\ and Structural Columns\ down has to be exactly the same as the delivered families. If directories are identical but family names have been changed, i.e, "W Shapes.rfa" is renamed to "ourW Shapes.rfa", the filename check will fail. The Full custom option will need to be used for this case.
For Full Custom option, the assignment of family locations is totally freeform. You can start with the default Revit location or a valid Cutom Root config and then assign only the differences which could be a handful of changes or all 24 families. The families are broken into groups - Beams, Columns, Joists, and V Braces. The groups are broken down into the relevant family types for that group. The bottom right corner of the dialog box can be grabbed to expand for long file paths or to see all of the 24 items at once.
After the configuration has been adjusted, validity checks are performed for the two custom versions. For the Custom Root option, all 24 familes related to RAM are verified that they actually exist and that the version of each family is less than or equal to the running version of Revit i.e., a 2027 family can't be used in 2025. The Full Custom version performs an additional check to verify that the assigned familes also belong to the correct category i.e., the W shape column family assignment must belong to the Structural Columns family. No check is performed to see if the W shape family is actually W shapes so be careful when assigning familes to each option.
The family configurations are version specific and saved to a single file here:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VoxelLink\FamilyLibrarySettings.vlcfg
The configuration does NOT need to be recreated on all the user desktops. The family locations for each Revit version can be configured on one desktop then the FamilyLibrarysettings.vlcfg file can be copied to other desktops and placed in the same folder (<username> will be different for each).
